Biography

Adrian is a ballet dancer driven by the belief that movement, artistry, and storytelling have the power to inspire, connect, and transform lives. His work spans performance, education, and advocacy, shaping the future of dance globally.

A dedicated artist and leader, Adrian has made history in the ballet world while championing mentorship, diversity, and artistic excellence in every aspect of his career.

Dance

Mitchell trained in the United States, beginning his pre-professional studies at 13 in Los Angeles under Yuri Grigoriev and Yvonne Mounsey at Westside Ballet. He further honed his skills at institutions such as Houston Ballet Academy, Gelsey Kirkland Academy. He credits most of his technical and artistic growth to his time at the Ellison Ballet Professional Training Program where he worked under the tutelage of Artistic Director Edward Ellison. In 2014, he made history as the first Black graduate of the Vaganova Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, and went on to become the first Black man to join a major Russian ballet company—the Mikhailovsky Theatre—in 2015.

As a Soloist at the Mikhailovsky, Mitchell quickly rose to prominence, performing a wide range of roles in both the classical and contemporary repertoire. His technical precision, dramatic presence, and ability to embody complex characters set him apart as one of the most compelling male dancers of his generation. His classical repertoire includes Espada in "Don Quixote," Fairy Carabosse in "Sleeping Beauty," and Tybalt in "Romeo and Juliet." His contemporary work includes partnering world-renowned ballerina Polina Semionova in Nacho Duato’s "White Darkness," a performance that was widely praised for its emotional depth and seamless partnering.

Mitchell performs frequently at major ballet galas and festivals and is a guest leading dancer for the Los Angeles Ballet. His career has taken him to some of the world’s most renowned stages, where he has performed alongside principal dancers from top companies such as the Bolshoi Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet, and American Ballet Theatre. His presence at international dance events has solidified his reputation as a global ballet ambassador, bridging cultures through the universal language of movement.

Leadership


Mitchell has taken on significant leadership roles in the dance world, including programming the prestigious World Ballet Festival and curating the upcoming Evening of Dance at Festival Napa Valley. He serves as the Associate Executive Director of Westside School of Ballet, where he oversees award-winning training programs and special initiatives such as professional development, masterclasses.


He serves as a guest ballet master for Los Angeles Ballet and directs their Trainee program. He is a judge for international ballet competitions, including Youth America Grand Prix, The Music Center’s Spotlight Awards and Ballet Connection in Tokyo, and has served as an Artistic Ambassador for the American Ballet Theatre JKO School.

Education


As an educator and coach, Mitchell has guided numerous award-winning pupils, sending dancers to some of the world's leading ballet institutions. He teaches masterclasses at prominent institutions, including Kaatsbaan Summer Intensive and ABT Studio Company. His dedication to mentorship ensures that the next generation of dancers benefits from his wealth of experience and insight.

Advocacy


Mitchell is a passionate advocate for diversity in ballet. In 2020, he founded Dance in Color, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting inclusivity and representation in the professional dance industry. Additionally, he leads Dance to Dreams, an initiative in collaboration with Westside Ballet, Dance in Color, and California Dance Institute to attract underserved youth to ballet. His efforts in advocacy underscore his commitment to ensuring ballet remains accessible and reflective of the world’s rich cultural diversity.

Entertainment & Fashion


Beyond the ballet stage, Mitchell has made an impact in the world of fashion and luxury branding. He has collaborated with renowned designers such as Gareth Pugh and participated in high-profile events like New York Fashion Week. His presence in the fashion world extends to being featured in Paris Vogue and working with prestigious brands like Chopard and Kate Spade. His work in fashion highlights the intersection of dance and design, emphasizing movement, elegance, and artistry.

Mitchell’s influence also extends into the sports and performance world. In 2024, he was a panelist for Leaders in Sports: Sports Performance Summit, hosted by Red Bull at their headquarters in Santa Monica. His insights into physical and mental performance, developed through his extensive experience as a dancer and educator, continue to shape discussions on peak performance and artistic excellence.
